The Transmission and its filter should be changed at around 70,000 miles, I've done a few of these and never found any problems with the fluid, or anything in the filter, so I would be tempted to change just the fluid . Having said that, changing the filter and sump gasket is not a bad job to do, but you will need a universal dipstick and some sort of temp gauge when re filling
So here we go on the step by step
Remove the trans dipstick tag, snap off tag and puch the clip down with a small screwdriver (I get new ones from Ebay, but you can just use a cable tie)
I use a sucker to remove the fluid via the dipstik tube, but yo can remove the sump plug. Either way save the fluid and take a note of the amount (usually just over 4 litre)
Jack car up .place on axle stands and remove the undertray
Either remove the sump plug and drain the fluid or suck it out from the dipstick tube
Remove all the sump bolts and drop the sump (note the sump gasket, a very good design)
I the sump ypu will find a magnet, this should be clean, but the sump will contain some aluminium sludge, this is normal, don't worry
The filter can now be removed,
it just pulls off...

Now its just a simle case of pushing a new filter into place, renewing the gasket and replacing the sump pan
Torque for the bolts is 29 ft lb
The rear blots behind the crossmember is a little tricky but I use a small spanner on the star bit
6. Filling with fluid
This is critical and must be done correctly, a cup full either way and the transmission will work but shifts will be effected. Under filling will result in "hanging" box will hang in gears and be slow to change up when cold. Over filling will result in pushing, when hot the transmission will feel like its still driving when lifting off the power
If you have measured the amount you have took out you should have about 4 litres, add this amount to start with. Fluid is added via the dipstick tube . so this will take some time
Now take a reading.....start the car up and with your foot on the brake, go though all the gears, including reverse. Now go back to neutral and with the car still running insert the dipstick until you feel it touch the sump. The reading is the distance from the bottom of the sump. Measure the temp of the fluid off the dipstick and look the readings up on the graph below. I then add fluid till I'm close to the line, be careful not to overfill unless you have a sucker !
I then leave the car running for a while or go for a short drive before taking another reading, if all is good I leave the car over night and take a final reading next morning to do a cold check
If you haven't got a dipstick tag a small cable tie can be used, to hold the cap in place
The oil sucker.....I very useful tool for this job and engine oil changes
( no more sump plugs and oil running down your arm !)
